Declutter Without Tossing It

A simple sorting system and a room-by-room checklist. Keep what you love, lose the clutter, store the "maybe" pile.

The 4-box system (the whole method)

  • Keep — you use it or love it. It stays.
  • Store — not ready to part with it, but it doesn’t need to be underfoot (seasonal, sentimental, “someday”)
  • Donate / sell — good condition, you won’t miss it
  • Toss / recycle — broken, expired, duplicated

Room by room (15–30 min each)

  • Bedroom closet — anything not worn in 12 months → Store or Donate
  • Under the bed — off-season clothing, shoes, spare bedding → Store
  • Kitchen — duplicate gadgets and "one day" appliances → Donate; rare serveware → Store
  • Living room — books you’ve read, decor out of rotation → Store
  • Bathroom / linen — expired products (Toss), excess towels → Donate
  • Entryway / hall closet — gear for the wrong season → Store
  • Garage / utility — keep only what you’ll use this season

Finish strong

  • Donate or sell within 48 hours (before second-guessing creeps in)
  • Photograph what you’re storing so you remember what you have
  • Box and store the "Store" pile — out of the house, not in another closet
